Le thème

Rip Kirby est un athlète, ancien marine, qui a obtenu la médaille du mérite pour ses exploits dans le Pacifique durant la seconde guerre mondiale. C'est également un chimiste réputé qui fait régulièrement des conférences. Après la guerre, il est devenu détective. Toutes ses connaissances scientifiques lui servent à résoudre les affaires les plus compliquées.

Il a un serviteur : Desmond et est fiancé à Dorian Honey.

La série a été créée le 4 mars 1946.

Les auteurs

Le créateur de la série est Alex Raymond. A partir de 1952, les scénarios sont écrits par Fred Dickenson. Après la disparition accidentelle de Alex Raymond en 1956, la série est reprise par John Prentice assisté par Alden McWilliams, Al Williamson et Wayne Boring.

Les personnages

	Rip Kirby est toujours très élégant. Il garde son calme en toutes circonstances.
	Desmond (Edmond dans la version française) est un ancien forçat. Il s'est reconverti en majordome stylé au service de Rip Kirby. Quand il est nécessaire de forcer une porte ou un coffre ou de s'introduire dans un milieu louche, ses anciennes activités sont bien utiles.
	Dorian Honey est la fiancée de Rip Kirby. Son principal défaut est d'être très jalouse. Elle a peut-être raison car Rip Kirby aime beaucoup les jolies femmes qui l'entourent dans ses aventures.
	Pagan Lee est une ancienne dame du milieu. Elle n'en est que plus fascinante pour Rip Kirby. Inutile de dire que Dorian Hony la hait.
